Have you ever heard of the “Dark Continent”? It’s the term that people used to call the continent of Africa! It was given that name because of the color of the people that were from the Motherland. If Africa was known as the “Dark Continent”, how is it that now if you are from North Africa you are considered white?! Shouldn’t that person just be considered African? There are plenty of people born and raised in South Africa that are white in color, so what measurements are being used to determine ethnicity?
In my mind, this is all just another way to deny Black people of their pride and culture. How often have you had an argument about the complexion of the Egyptian Queens Cleopatra and Nefertiti? It seems that the books that once served as evidence are no longer in print, or they’re extremely difficult to locate.
Have you had any conversations about the social injustice of Black people lately? Even though it is statistically incorrect on all levels, I’ve heard Black men basically say that we are given the same opportunities as everyone else, and that it’s the fault of that one person or persona for their situation. However, our nation was built on committing genocide on a group of people for their land. It was built on the backs of slaves! Every dysfunction that currently plagues us is a direct link from slavery. There will always be racism in place because that’s how this entire nation that we call the “United States of America” was created. People need to understand that it’s bigger than a person or group of people. There is an entire system in place to hinder the enhancement of Black people.
For example: we get paid less no matter our education level. We pay more for our basic services, and we typically have poorer health due to not being able to afford proper care and having bad eating habits. Let’s not forget the “last one hired but the first one fired” rule of thumb. I know that I’m not the only person aware of these issues and the constant attacks on Black communities such as releasing crack into major cities across America and the negative media attention.
Most mainstream rap is something I consider to be an attack on the Black community as well, because after so long you become what you constantly listen to. Some people have the ability to separate real life from sick fantasy, but there are lots of people who can’t. Just think about how listening to your favorite song makes you feel. Music is a worldwide language. Just imagine if it was all about self-love, becoming a better person, and completely up lifting.
All I’m asking is that you open your mind and eyes to pay attention to what’s going on around you. We were never meant to survive…….
“We were never meant to survive…….” damn the truth hurts. Lately, I’ve been finding myself sort of battling with music. I’m one of those people that see’s some music as solely entertainment, but even then, it doesn’t make it right. Some of the shit these people are saying, I have no room for it in my life. I even go so far as to not want to know things about some of these celebrities lives, but then I find out something and I ask myself, “how can I continue to support that/him/her?” To make things worst, some of these rap artist, or black celebrities, are seen as representatives of black people AND black culture, so people that aren’t black, take their word as bond and think it must apply to all black people.
Our race was taught to turn the other way when it is not directly concerning us and that’s why there is little change
