THE FACTS WITH A SMIDGE OF SARCASM AND OPINION
Last weekend was Motor City Pride, and should have been a joyous weekend for the LGBTQ+ community and those who love and support them. However, to the surprise of Motor City Pride attendees, they were met by a hate group -The Neo Nazis! The Nazis marched through Downtown Detroit with AR-15s and at least two other types of guns, and had huge shield guards. Of course everyone was surprised except the Detroit Police Department and The Police Chief James Craig.
On June 11th, 2019, citizens of Detroit addressed the city council about their involvement in allowing the hate group to invade the PRIDE parade- particularly in a city that has majority Black and Hispanic residents. It turns out the Detroit City Council knew nothing about the Nazis coming to pride. Chief Craig (who in my opinion acts like a Nazi) said he decided to keep it away from the public. His reasoning was that he didn’t want to scare anyone or potentially ignite any violence. Chief Craig stated “We didn’t want to create unnecessary fear!”
In his words, what the Chief decided to do was have his “officers create a covering buffer around the Nazis to prevent counter-protestors from getting too close.” That sounds exactly like what we saw, which was officers protecting Nazis. The same Nazis informed Chief Craig a week prior that they were coming to Motor City Pride to be violent and to harm participants of Motor City Pride. As far as the public knows, Chief Craig didn’t inform Mike Duggan (The Mayor) of the warnings he was privy too beforehand. The Mayor allegedly trusts Chief Craig to make sound decisions and keep the citizens safe.

Over the past month, Chief Craig has downplayed too many critical scenarios. Black women in the city have been found in garbage cans and have been raped. Chief Craig didn’t want to label the person committing these crimes as a serial rapist or killer, and he didn’t warn anyone besides his officers that a hate group would be at a celebration for the LGBTQ community to literally kill people. It seems as if Chief Craig is only interested in protecting himself in an attempt to be viewed as a stern leader amongst his peers and higher ups in politics. It doesn’t seem as if he actually cares about Detroiters at all, unless it’s some petty crimes that he wants to discuss on the news and tell the public how he’s going to throw the book at the criminal.
AT THE END OF THE DAY
We don’t need a police Chief like James Craig! He is not for the people and I am not willing to give him another chance to prove that he doesn’t care about the citizens Of Detroit. He isn’t even in support of his officers! I’m pretty sure most, if not all of them didn’t want to protect Nazis! So many people stated in the City council meeting that they never would have put their lives in danger by attending PRIDE had they been aware of the Nazis attending. People are traumatized.
It is also important to know that at the City Council meeting, someone brought up the fact that Nazis were saying racial slurs (Aimed at Black people) to Pride attendees, and Pride attendees fired back. Chief Craig said “Both sides were wrong!” Who does James Craig work for? He is the one that is wrong for allowing this entire situation to take place! It’s very clear why James Craig received a Sambo award!
Eventually the Nazis were chased out of Detroit by locals, but they should have never been allowed at Motor City Pride to begin with. If our own police Chief doesn’t care about the safety of its citizens, we must protect each other!
