Welcome to the 1960’s!

Welcome to the era when the FDA approved birth control (1960). It’s when the Vietnam war officially began (1961). President Kennedy was assassinated (1963). A time when the KILLERS oops I mean the Nation of Islam suspended Malcolm X (1964). The Civil Rights Act to stop discrimination was also signed and passed by Congress in 1964. Malcolm X was assassinated by the same group he was suspended from on the first day of National brotherhood week (1965). In 1968 President Nixon was elected,Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King jr. were both assassinated (Really, American Government?). Neil Armstrong walked on the moon in 1969.

I always try to be careful about the things I wish for. I remember specifically stating that I wish I was around in the 60’s so that I could experience the struggle, the marches, the movements, and hear and see some of the greatest leaders that ever walked this earth.

It took me a moment to realize that right now we are living in the 1960’s. Police officers are killing the same people they are supposed to serve and protect… or are they?! The jury choosing not to indict the officers that killed Michael Brown and Eric Garner has people in an uproar. Those two cases aren’t even the most recent cases. Let’s not forget about John Crawford being killed by the police, and so was 12 year old Tamir Rice.

There has been a long history of distrust of police the in the African American community. How can you trust people who were taught to hate you, beat you just because, and find pleasure in letting animals attack you? There has always been a huge difference in how police handle Black citizens verses white citizens. Black people have to worry about surviving a police stop while white people typically do not. If you don’t believe me, search the hashtag “#CrimingWhileWhite.” Now the public is beginning to see how officers are misusing their authority to harass people, seize funds of citizens, and use deadly force with a weak defense of “they were afraid”. Citizens of the world are realizing that this affects everyone!

I have been hearing many people say that all police officers are bad (which I totally agree with), but not many people are saying that all citizens aren’t bad either. This is not an attack on officers! Our humanity is what’s being attacked. All who commit crimes should be held accountable- including police officers.

Protests have been sparked all around the United States in an effort to take a stand, to be noticed, and to inform authority and the media that it is not okay to slaughter people just because you feel like it. Just as it did in the 60’s, it’s going to take collectiveness, strategic planning, and demonstrations! All we’re missing are strong individual leaders, but maybe that’s a good thing since the 60’s was a huge assassination era for the Government.

Be prepared to hear of more militant and murderous acts by the police, especially during peaceful protests. It’s all being done to control the public and to make us completely fearful of authority. Since history is repeating itself, I’m wondering if the United States will ruin itself on the same principles of which it was built?

  1. Great explanation of the triumphs and tragedies of the 1960’s. Those historical moments mentioned speak volumes of what’s yet to come since history generally repeats itself.

  2. This is an awesome article. I was reading about the fall of the Roman Empire…the US is on track. Smh. Thanks for your wisdom and insight.

    1. My Mother always talks about the United States being the new Roman Empire and how it’s going to fall. Thank you for commenting.

  3. “…but not many people are saying that all citizens aren’t bad either.” Whenever I talk about law enforcement, I bring that up – the police tend to treat everybody like criminals, which is ridiculous. But we know there is nothing new under the sun. Great observation/comparison.
